I have the same question as some others here. Do you need to lap the cpu-cooler as well?
IT does nothing!!!!!!!! NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent guide thank you I will definitely give it a go with a few cpus I have.
@Jayjr1105 You shouldnt even be lapping anything. If youre not an extreme extreme like extreme overclocker. Just get a better cpu cooler.
I would make one suggestion. After getting to the bare copper, you can no longer detect any peaks or valleys in the CPU. To insure that you are maintaining a flat lapping job, use a marker and draw an "X" on it. So while your sanding, you can continue to ensure that the material is being removed evenly. Great video!!

Is lapping the CPU worth it if you don’t lapp the heatsink? I am getting very poor cooling results with a 90mm heatpipe style cooler on a quad core athlon II so I plan on lapping it soon. would it be pointless if I didn’t lapp the CPU as well? I would rather not do the CPU in fear of bending pins (AMD)
@bhavvv lap an old cpu then idiot since ur so cool and u upgrade each gen. fuggn turd! just do it if you’d like to do it.. don’t tell us what a lame *ss u are.

What about lapping the surface of the CPU cooler as well?

I’d like to lap mine, but I buy retail CPUs for the 3 year warranty, even though I upgrade each gen.
OEM cpus are normally only £5-£10 cheaper, with two years less warranty. Even fif you use a custom cooler, no one has to kno you did and they cant tell, so the warranty wont void.

How was the temperature results? How much improvement?

@mauricerrr Oh, if your talking about the heat from the fiction of the sandpaper, keep in mind modern day cpu’s shut the pc down (thermal Shutdown) to save the cpu from heat damage at about 90 degrees c about 194 F. the friction of the sandpaper wont generate near that much heat. hope this helps

how long this took you ?
i need to lap mine thermalright extreme 120 ultra
and e6750….

@TechTalkTips ok thanks, I thought that maybe the temperature on the cpu got to high because of heat generated by friction, I know it sounds unlikely but I wanted to be sure

@mauricerrr the whole point of lapping is to get a completely flat surface to give yourself better contact with your cpu cooler in turn giving you cooler temps.
follow this guide and you should be fine

Great guide, but to watch the whole video means to watch you do A LOT of sanding.

Thats a sexy shine … Im so doing this to my q6600.
Thanks for the Video.

Stupid question but is it possible that your CPU breaks when your lapping,
because of temperature being to high or something like that?

Nice vid, I will be trying this soon on my Q6600 as 2 of the cores are always about 7c higher than the other 2. Im currently running it at 3Ghz, 68C on 2 hottest cores @ full load. Reckon I should be able to run it at 3.4Ghz after as temps are the only thing stopping me at the moment
