The Ultimate CPU Overclocking Guide!

AMD has launched their much anticipated Radeon HD 6800 series of graphicss, starting with the Radeon HD 6870 and Radeon HD 6850. Both cards have been introduced as mid-range cards to compete directly with NVIDIAs GTX 460 1GB and 768MB. The two new GPUs fill the fuzzy mid-range gap that ATI wasnt as strong in with its 5000 series, and it provides some tremendous improvements to areas such as tessellation, image quality enhancements, new multimedia functions include HDMI 1.4, Blu-Ray 3D and improve Eyefinity. All of this comes it at $240, and $180 for the 6870 and 6850 respectively. ATI goes head to head with NVIDIA for the graphics card sweet spot. Yeah the 6870 is faster than the 5830 and 5850.
    At least faster than the 5850 most of the time.

    Cheers, I got my new computer about 6 months back with the HD5770.
    It pulls really well & the only game it’s not really been able to play is Metro2033 fully maxed it may lag the odd time on the newer games, but least it can play Crysis maxed :D

    so I’m looking to improve my card but the newer HD6800 so far currently don’t seem that worth it, i mean due to only getting my computer a bit ago, do you think it’s best to invest in the HD5970 or see what else the HD6000 series has to offer?

  4. wmjs2andfriends says:

    is the HD 6870 better than the HD 5830 or even the HD 5850

    @Cake244 a bottleneck is when one part is holding back a pc from its full performance. For example if you put an AMD sempron with a ATI RADEON 5970 x2, thats an extreme bottleneck because that cpu is poor and that card is super powerful

  11. Cake244 says:

    @KEYBOARDWARRIOR786 bottleneck?

    @Cake244 i would personally upgrade before getting this card, it will work but you will have an extreme bottleneck, if you have the money, you can build yourself a good pc with this card for $550

    @Cake244 Is your PSU 520W or higher? with a quad core Phenom II it takes up about 500W with two 7200 RPM drives, and with it i7 quad cores is about 530W I believe.

    6870 definitely could replace the 5850 and the 6850 probably replaces the 5830 and below. Just based on the benchmarks I have seen anyway.
